Summary
In 2011, Meat & Livestock Australia initiated the Pasture Variety Trial Network to deliver independent information to producers about the performance of over 100 different key pasture varieties grown in temperate regions across Australia.
An Excel template has been created for service providers to help perform the statistical analysis of dry matter data at a single pasture site, which can improve the way these results are reported within the Pasture Variety Trial Network.
This project provides independent information to producers on the performance of different pasture varieties in different seasons, which they can use when making the important decision of what pasture variety to use in their production system.
Objectives
The objectives of this project were to:
- develop analysis protocols for the management of pasture trial data
- provide reports to the industry based on this analysis to inform decisions about choosing the best varieties.
Key findings
- A novel statistical method for estimating seasonal variety performance is now available through the MLA Pasture Trial Network tool.
- A further template has been developed for reporting results using a five-star rating system, which is also available through the tool.
- For each season, there are six columns of data that contain information on different pasture varieties and includes an indication of the pasture with the highest probability of success.
Benefits to industry
The web tools developed in this project will enable red meat producers to make a more informed decision about selecting a suitable pasture variety for their environment, which will improve the efficiency of production.
Future research
A consistent, long-term investment in the program should involve investment that is directed at data management, statistical design, analysis and reporting.
