L.MSG.2107 - Development of DATAbank IT System for Research Project Design and Data Storage

The DATAbank system is a cloud-based system that assists in the management of research trial designs and sensory data.

Project start date: 03 December 2020
Project end date: 31 October 2023
Publication date: 17 January 2024
Project status: Completed
Livestock species: Grain-fed Cattle, Grass-fed Cattle, Sheep, Lamb
Relevant regions: National, International

Summary

This project developed a cloud-based system to a) manage research trial designs and b) include a database to securely house research data for beef and sheepmeat including details of meat samples collected and related consumer scores. The system will be known as DATAbank.

Objectives

Development of a cloud-based DATAbank IT system to enable ongoing eating quality beef and sheepmeat research according to the MSA Protocols. This system is key to future proofing of our existing Australian eating quality research data and systems.

Key findings

The primary outcomes for the development of DATAbank are:
- control research design and execution ensuring data compatibility.
- unique sample identification and linkage to muscle, cut, carcase and animal data.
- software components will facilitate trial design, physical collection, fabrication and storage of research samples and allocation to sensory sessions.
- further components will manage the consumer test process, integrate results with the source sample data and provide a base for linkage to external databases such as genomic or industry animal identification.
- a database structure to securely store all research data.

Benefits to industry

The development of this system is key to enabling the future of ongoing research into beef and sheepmeat eating quality that follows MSA protocols.

MLA action

This online summary will be published on the MLA R&D website.

Future research

Further research will occur for maintenance and further development of the system.
