Summary

This project enabled Coles’ Retail Ready Operations Australia (RROA) to build internal capability that allowed the business to implement; pathogen reduction systems, operational efficiency and PowerBI dashboards, vision validation systems/barcode scanners and software solutions that resulted in faster fresher flow of product to stores.

Objectives

The overall objective of this work will be to develop a digital strategy and evaluate the feasibility and commercial options of data capture, management and analytics across the businesses.

Key findings

Pathogen reduction trials showed up to a 2-log reduction in pathogens which could extend shelf life by 1–3 days. Further investigation is underway.
Operational efficiency and PowerBI dashboards have been implemented providing real time data while updates to vision/barcode validation scanners has resulted in a 100% inspection rate. New software solutions have contributed to a reduction in shipping times to stores by one day, a specific project to implement this system is underway.

Benefits to industry

  • Pathogen reduction could extend shelf life by 1–3 days.
  • Operational efficiency and PowerBI dashboards have been implemented, providing real time data.
  • Updates to vision/barcode validation scanners has resulted in a 100% inspection rate for product leaving the factory to minimise the application of wrong labels.
  • New software solutions have contributed to a reduction in shipping times to stores by one day.

MLA action

Publish final report. When the Puradigm and Tillit projects are completed, MLA should conduct specific communications of the benefits of these technologies to industry.

Future research

The business will implement the open-source software solution to optimise time to store while the pathogen reduction trial is now a standalone project to report detailed benefits of this technology.
