AFI Roundtable 2022: Cultivating ESG Capability

Join us to discuss the capability and capacity of Australian agriculture to meet sustainability goals in environmental management, social responsibility and business capital.
Session 1. Why ESG matters
Setting the scene: overview of the ESG reporting environment
• What is an ESG report and why have they become so significant?
• Risk management, regulation and reward: opportunities vs. transition to BAU
• ESG impacts on Australian agriculture: now and the next decade
Session 2. Jargon-busting
ESG reporting uses terms that sound familiar but can easily be conflated or misunderstood. To understand your business responsibilities, it’s vital to understand the lingo.
• Explaining principles, criteria, targets and metrics et al.
• What is natural capital accounting and how might it change financial reporting?
• Why farm business will need to understand social and governance criteria
Session 3. The ESG toolbox
The right tools and technology will be critical to ensuring ESG requirements do not create an unnecessary reporting burden on farm businesses, and can fit into existing practices.
• Technology for monitoring, recording and reporting
• R&D for practice improvement
• Data platforms and other data sources
Session 4. Leading or lagging?
The rapidly evolving ESG environment has been mostly business- and investor-driven to date. How might policy interventions positively or negatively impact on farm businesses and the Australian agricultural industry?
• The role of government vs. the domain of markets
• ESG’s place in economic policy
• Australia’s ESG position in a global trading ecosystem
This event will be held both in person and online. Recordings will be available to attendees.
