Get smart with genetic data

04 January 2016

With an increased focus on genetic improvement in Australia’s goatmeat industry, particularly in more intensive production systems, breeders of seed stock are investing considerable effort in collecting genetic and performance information about their animals.

It is, however, important that the data collected be fit for purpose and of a quality which allows for integration into the KIDPLAN genetic database so the industry can make the most of its investment in genetics.

“Data collection is critical for KIDPLAN,” said Hamish Chandler, Manager Sheep Genetics.

“If data is not collected properly, ‘noise’ can blur the results and not give a true representation of genetic performance.”

MLA, through Sheep Genetics and Richmond Hill Agribusiness, has developed a workshop known as the KIDPLAN Datasmart workshop which covers:

  • the basics of data collection
  • how estimated breeding values (EBVs) are calculated
  • the use of Pedigree Master software to collate information

The collection and maintenance of accurate data also means the results of other research, such as the MLA’s Boer Select Buck Evaluation Trial, can be fully leveraged.

“The KIDPLAN Datasmart workshops build on the information gathered as part of MLA’s Boer Select Buck Evaluation Trial. This trial has helped develop much stronger genetic linkages between herds which allows comparison between different environments and removes influences like seasonal conditions or different management practices,” Hamish said.
