Learn the latest on pastures at Tamworth

07 October 2016

Producers in the north-west region of NSW are encouraged to attend the Pastures Update and SAMRC Forum, being held in Tamworth in late October.

The 2016 Grassland Society of NSW Pasture Update is being held in conjunction with MLA's Southern Australia Meat Research Council (SAMRC) who is seeking input into future research and development priorities.

Senior Land Services Officer – Mixed Farming, George Truman, said producers would have the opportunity to hear and see the latest in temperate annual legumes, tropical grasses and legume options.

“There will also be discussions on pasture rundown, which has been causing production losses – what it is and can we fix it, as well as talks on livestock focusing on issues relevant to the season and animal production such as animal production from tropical grasses, he said.

The event will be held on Friday, 28 October 2016 at Tamworth Agricultural Institute, Calala.

SAMRC is an independent incorporated association established to provide advice to MLA on the research, development and adoption needs of sheep and grassfed cattle producers across southern Australia.

Forum highlights will include:

  • An update on SAMRC's structure, function and research, development and adoption priorities from SAMRC Chair Ralph Shannon and the Northern NSW regional committee chair and beef producer, Tom Amey.
  • MLA's General Manager Producer Consultation and Adoption Michael Crowley will explain what your levies do for sheepmeat and grassfed beef producers.
  • North-west Local Land Services Livestock Officer Sally Balmain will outline seasonal livestock issues.
  • Paddock inspections of temperate annual legumes, tropical grasses and legume mixes.
  • A visit to Goonoo Goonoo Station, where owner Tony Haggarty will share how he uses tropical grasses for red meat production and Queensland Department of Agriculture and Fisheries Senior Pasture Agronomist Gavin Peck will address the issue of pasture run down and how it can be fixed.

The event is being hosted by NSW Department of Primary Industries, north-west Local Land Services, the Grassland Society of NSW, MLA and SAMRC.

It starts at 9.30 am with places limited. The cost is $20 and includes morning tea, lunch and bus transport. Register online by Monday, 24 October 2016.
