Statement from Michael Crowley, Managing Director, Meat & Livestock Australia on latest US tariff announcement
MLA is aware of the United States Government’s announcement that a new 12.5% tariff will apply to all Australian exports to the United States.
It is important to note that Australian beef remains exempt from these measures and continues to enter the United States tariff-free, maintaining the 0% tariff arrangement established in November 2025.
However, Australian sheepmeat and goatmeat exports will be impacted by the new tariff arrangements, creating additional challenges for exporters and customers in our largest red meat export market.
MLA will continue to work closely with industry and the Australian Government to assess the implications of the announcement and support market access outcomes for the Australian red meat sector.
MLA maintains a dedicated office in Washington, D.C., and we will continue to engage with government, industry partners and stakeholders throughout the supply chain to ensure Australian red meat remains highly valued, competitive and trusted in the US market.
