Good winter rain in the east, dry in the west - BOM
02 July 2015
Rainfall during June was patchy across the country, although there was some useful rainfall events recorded across drought affected areas of the eastern states in the latter half of the month. According to the Bureau of Meteorology (BOM), the majority of central Queensland received only ‘average’ rain, although southern and far northern regions measured ‘above average’ falls. Close to 64mm was recorded at Roma, which is more than twice the mean level for June, while only 18mm was received further north at Longreach. Central and western districts of NSW received some promising falls, with Tamworth also experiencing twice the average amount of June rainfall, at 109mm. The NT also received some very good rain in June, with large swathes of the territory falling into the ‘above average’ to ‘very much above average’ range.
In the south, western Victorian rainfall was mostly ‘average’, while eastern parts of the state experienced a drier than normal June. SA was also largely ‘average’, although the south-east corner was very dry. Northern Tasmania rainfall was ‘below average’ for the month.
Despite some heavy (50-100mm) and widespread falls through southern WA in late June, it was not enough to alleviate the very dry conditions persisting across much of the state. In particular, rainfall in the south-west region was ‘very much below average’, while much of the Pilbara received ‘below average’ falls.
