Cattle grids jump across the eastern states again
Widespread showers across major producing regions, resulting in tighter supplies, have seen over-the-hook cattle indicators (OTH) move higher again this week – with some contributors lifting quotes upwards of 20¢/kg cwt week-on-week, for the second week in a row.
Processor demand strengthened across the eastern states, with reports suggesting well-conditioned cattle across all categories are eagerly sought after. As a result, OTH indicators in Queensland, NSW and Victoria increased considerably, particularly for grown cattle and cows.
In Queensland;
- Heavy yearling steers (300-320kg, A-C muscle) averaged 559¢, up 17¢/kg cwt
- Heavy MSA yearling steers (300-320, A-C muscle) averaged 571¢, up 18¢/kg cwt
- Medium grown steers (260-280, 0-4 tooth) averaged 544¢, up 17¢/kg cwt
- Heavy 70-day grainfed (300-320kg, A-C muscle) averaged 561¢, up 21¢/kg cwt
- The highest cow indicator (300-400kg, A-D muscle) averaged 509¢, up 17¢/kg cwt
In NSW;
- Heavy yearling steers averaged 567¢, up 19¢/kg cwt
- Heavy MSA yearling steers averaged 578¢, up 14¢/kg cwt
- Medium grown steers averaged 550¢, up 20¢/kg cwt
- The highest cow indicator reached 495¢, up 20¢/kg cwt
In Victoria;
- Heavy yearling steers averaged 564¢, up 18¢/kg cwt
- Medium grown steers averaged 556¢, up 18¢/kg cwt
- The highest cow indicator averaged 471¢kg cwt
Last week, adult cattle slaughter in Queensland was just over 72,000 head – steady on the week prior. In NSW and Victoria, however, adult cattle slaughter declined 22% and 18% week-on-week, to just shy of 25,500 head and 20,100 head, respectively.
