Summary

This report provides findings from a pilot study involving collection and information fromconsignments of cattle on export vessels travelling from Darwin to Indonesia. The study arose from industry interest in describing the change in liveweight in animals being exported from Northern Australia to South East Asia (particularly Indonesia) and in identifying factors or drivers that may influence liveweight-based performance measures. This pilot study was specifically designed to test assumptions and methodologies for data collection in order to determine the feasibility of a subsequent larger study that might directly address the above objectives. The pilot study successfully enrolled two voyages and collected data on animal performance and other drivers from one voyage. The study has identified a range of factors that will be important in the design and successful implementation of a larger project. A draft design and indicative budget is described for a 3-year project and it is recommended that a workshop be held with key project personnel to discuss the findings of this report and develop a final proposal and budget.
