Summary

MLAR&D funding has led to the development of the TakeStock tool, which analyses beef stud herd genetic progress and provides diagnostic information on how different recording and selection decisions have impacted genetic progress. This tool is now being delivered via ABRI and individual breed societies are developing extension approaches to introduce the tool and its use to their members.
Angus Australia ran a series of 8 workshops for their members to introduce the tool and provide training in its use:
(i) Assisting members to interpret and use the information in their TakeStock reports
(ii) ensuring that members understand how improved performance data recording (quality and quantity of data submitted to Breedplan)and selection decisions impact on the rate of progress achieved.
A series of eight Angus TakeStock workshops were held in October/November, followed by web-based post workshop support resources, that targeted Angus Australia’s bigger, most progressive members, and were jointly delivered by one AA and one Southern Beef Technology Service staff member. Similar workshops were delivered to members of other breed societies by SBTS, with financial support from MLA. Angus Australia is not a member of SBTS.
