Summary

This project was conducted in conjunction with Pfizer Australia through the MLA Donor Company.  It developed a DVD and online educational material to assist new and existing feedlot employees to understand and appreciate the principles of handling stock in a low stress manner within the feedlot environment.
Material content addressed all aspects of cattle handling within the feedlot environment, including scanning and weighing, introduction to a receival pen, induction handling, introduction to a new pen, acclimation, pen riding, identification of sick animals, removal of sick animals, removal of a pen, sorting and drafting, handling a sick animal and unloading and loading stock on to transport. Other aspects were addressed, but in less detail, including biosecurity, WH&S, animal welfare, physiology, nutrition and data collection; to ensure trainees have a full appreciation of all aspects of animal handling and care.
The materials were produced by working closely with key members of the feedlot industry and in conjunction with NSW TAFE - New England Institute to ensure the finished product complied with and could be utilised in the delivery of the industry competency based training packages.
The end product was a DVD containing a combination of video with commentary, video interviews, animations, printable notes and documents for trainers, plus multiple choice questionnaires for course evaluation. The DVD was distributed to all accredited feedlots, with further copies being available through Pfizer Australia or by contacting MLA.
