Summary

The results of this study imply differences in breeder preference for traits between breeding direction, wool style production, and current on farm performance. The observed differences in preference when results were separated by direction were consistent with the end point at which value is captured in the various production systems. However, when separated by industry indicators of production system type, namely the breeders' direction and wool style production, the differences in preference were for traits which were assigned relatively low overall importance.
With the exception of preference for fleece weight by breeders with the direction "fine wool production - retaining wethers for wool growth" there was consistency in preference for fleece weight and fibre diameter throughout all classes of surveyed respondents. Consideration could therefore be given to the consolidation of indexes with respect to fleece weight and fibre diameter economic values.
The 1000Minds survey results indicate breeder preference for a broader range of trait improvements including increasing fat depth and comfort factor, not increasing crimp frequency, and reducing breech wrinkle. Thus, the results of this study provide useful information for prioritisation of research and recording effort towards traits where improvements in accuracy will be considered most beneficial by farmers.
