Summary

Dairy Australia identified an urgent need to upskill farm animal veterinarians in the recommended methods for euthanasia of sick, injured or unsaleable livestock following the closure of processing works and knackeries in several regions of Australia.  Veterinarians need to be trained in the correct use of captive bolt pistols and other devices which have become more widely available at a reduced cost over recent years. This knowledge enabled them to train their farmer clients and supply suitable equipment. They also needed to be able to provide advice about safe disposal of dead animals. Additionally the livestock industries needed to have trainers available to deliver courses to farmers more widely, such as the unit of competency AHCLSK307A Euthanase Livestock offered by the National Centre for Dairy Education Australia (NCDEA). MLA's funding allowed workshops to occur in NSW and Qld and deliver benefits to beef cattle and sheep more widely.  It could act as a template or example for broader implementation
