Summary
Persistence (of sown pasture species) was identified in the Feedbase Investment Plan as the top priority sought by meat producers. However, for many reasons, persistence is not well addressed in pasture evaluation trials.
The purpose of this brief is to propose a process that generates information about persistence and incorporates such ‘measures of persistence’ into pasture research/breeding and/or pasture management, and if warranted, to build the case for MLA/agency partners and seed companies to invest in this approach. Approaches to improve the communication of information about persistence (including novel approaches) to producers and researchers/breeders will also be developed.
The objective is to have, by December 9, 2011 a clear pathway (and industry support) for MLA investment into improving pasture persistence.
