Summary
Biosecurity research, development and extension plays an important role in underpinning productivity, growth, competitiveness and the sustainability of Australia’s livestock2 industries and their access to markets. Those involved in livestock biosecurity RD&E together form a complex and integrated web of research providers and investors. Integral components include the Australian Government, state and territory governments, Research and Development Corporations (RDCs), CSIRO, universities and private research providers (collectively referred to in this document as ‘participants’).
This complex web requires that it be highly organised and connected, particularly in relation to issues affecting multiple sectors, such as biosecurity, hence the need for an overarching strategy. The Strategy is part of the National Primary Industries RD&E Framework, initiated by the predecessor to the Agricultural Ministers Forum (AGMIN). The framework aims to promote greater collaboration and continuous improvement in the investment spent on primary industries RD&E resources nationally.
The Strategy is managed by Animal Health Australia on behalf of its members and the broader stakeholder group. A NABRDES Coordinator champions the Strategy and manages its operations. The Coordinator also works with the Strategy Implementation Committee to oversee implementation of the Strategy. As a participant in the NABRDES, MLA’s makes an annual contribution towards covering the cost of this service. This report covers financial year 2019.
