Summary

This extension project, co-funded with all the major breed societies, focusses on increasing rates of genetic improvement in the southern beef breeds, and will develop a part-user-pays funding model for established technologies.

Specific improvement strategies will be developed at both breed and herd level, based on accurate diagnosis of performance recording, selection decisions and generation intervals. The project has a target of increasing weighted average genetic merit in the southern breeds by $15 on $Index over 5 years, which is a 50% increase in the current rate of progress. The tools and approaches developed will be the basis of breed technical development in the period beyond this project.
