Summary

Since 2015, various livestock industries and experts have been coordinating development of Antimicrobial Stewardship (AMS) approaches to address antimicrobial resistance (AMR) in the industry. The Department of Agriculture and Water Resources is developing an Animal Sector AMR

This is jointly funded by the Australian Chicken Meat Federation, Agrifutures Australia, Australian Pork Limited, Dairy Australia, Australia Eggs Limited and MLA.

Objectives

The objective of the company managed agreement (CMA) was to fund a review of relevant Animal AMR documents and prepare an Animal AMS Research, Development and Extension (RD&E) strategy document.

Key findings

An Animal Industries Antimicrobial Stewardship RD&E strategy (AIASRDES) has been developed for the Australian livestock industries.

The development of the plan will be managed by Agrifutures Australia (subject to their systems).

Benefits to industry

By being involved with the review of relevant AMR and AMS documents, it allows the red meat industry to ensure the proposed approaches are favorable, and minimise any possible negative impact to the industry.
