Summary

MLA has been a signatory to the National Animal Welfare Research, Development and Extension Strategy (NAWRDES) since its inception in 2010, as part of the National Primary Industries RD&E Framework.

NAWRDES encourages greater co-investment and collaboration on a National basis to improve the efficient use of RD&E resources in the field of livestock animal welfare.

Secretarial management for the NAWRDES was contracted to Australian Pork Limited (APL), with all signatories sharing equally in this cost. This project covered the secretarial costs of the NAWRDES for the five financial years from 2015/16 to 2019/20.

Benefits to industry

MLA's involvement with NAWRDES helps Australia's livestock sectors to determine priority areas for cross-sectoral animal welfare RD&E. This approach delivers economies of scale and a more efficient use of research capability.
