Summary
In many agricultural industries, the effective attraction, retention and deployment of staff remains a significant barrier to increasing profitability and productivity. Simply accessed, well informed guidance for producers is particularly important as they take their first steps towards the employment of skills and capability beyond the family, and into the enterprise.
This project supported a collaborative investment by Australia's agricultural Research and Development Corporations (RDC's) in a new website; The People in Agriculture - Employment Starter Kit.
Other RDC investors include Dairy Australia, Grain RDC, Cotton RDC, Australian Pork Limited and Australian Eggs.
Objectives
The project objectives were to develop a website that provides producers and their workers with key information regarding employment within the agriculture industry, to build industry capability around employment and staff retention.
The site will be designed to assist users with key requirements on recruitment and employment.
Key findings
- The People in Agriculture website was launched in late 2016 and is an easy to use platform that features information on employment law, news, career management and professional practice to employers and employees within the agriculture industry.
- The website is highly valued as a resource for employment and employee information, including information on state based industry awards, WH&S requirements and career opportunities.
- The website also houses a resource library of templates for employers and employees within the agriculture industry.
Benefits to industry
The People in Agriculture website provides up to date detail on employment awards, benefits, wages, work health and safety, and industry news. It has also created an entry point for those wishing to become involved in the agriculture industry.
Cross RDC collaboration in creating and maintaining this website has lead to greater impact across all facets of agriculture and created a website rich in content and stories.
MLA action
Following on from the completion of this project, the People in Agriculture cross-RDC working group, including MLA, is looking to re-contract to continue investing in the agricultural employment space and extend the reach of the website.
Future research
Investment into this website continue, as well as marketing to increase new people engaging with the Agriculture industry. The cross-RDC working group will continue to operate.
