Summary

The Sheep Sustainability Framework (SSF) was developed to monitor, measure, and report industry performance against sustainability priorities.

Data and trends gathered through the SSF will identify opportunities on-farm, in transport, processing, and at the customer interface where practices can be improved by both the industry and individuals. In doing so, the SSF can be used by industry to help protect and grow access to investment, finance, customers, and markets by providing credible evidence of performance and improvement.

This project provided strategic and communication support, project coordination and advice for the development of the SSF and its inaugural report, through a three-phase stakeholder consultation process.

Objectives

The objectives of this project were to:
1. Undertake comprehensive stakeholder engagement to inform the inaugural Sheep Sustainability Framework (SSF).
2. Develop a reporting system/format to report on key indicators of sustainability in the sheep and wool industries.

Key findings

Based on extensive stakeholder engagement, a comprehensive reporting framework was developed that includes on-farm, feedlots, transport, saleyards and processing, covering both sheep meat and wool.

Benefits to industry

The Sheep Sustainability Framework supports individual businesses by providing evidence of Australia’s position as a global leader in sustainable sheep production. This will assist in maintaining market access for our products.

MLA action

MLA continues to provide resources that support the ongoing operation and development of the SSF.
