L.PGS.2024 - Delivery of PGS SLP Project Benchmarking for Profit and Production
MLA delivered a Profitable Grazing Systems (PGS) Supported Learning Package (SLP) 'Benchmarking for Profit and Production' to three producer groups in southern Western Australia.

Summary
The “Benchmarking for Profit and Production” SLP was delivered to three producer groups, with a total of 37 participants. The program was delivered over five sessions during a 14-month period and included sessions on business goals, setting future business goals, understanding business benchmarking and connecting this with business goals, undertaking analysis of businesses and comparison to identify business strengths and weaknesses, comparing benchmarks with high performing businesses and identifying what could be done to improve.
Objectives
“Benchmarking for Profit and Production” aims to develop producers’ ability to:
1. Identify current livestock business goals
2. Create future business goals/scenario planning
3. Understand & complete the benchmarking process and results.
4. Connect goals to benchmarking performance- comparative analysis
5. Utilise comparative analysis data to identify goals, strengths and weaknesses
6. Identify & understand what high-performing businesses are doing, and how these practices can
be incorporated into their own business.
Key findings
Three groups of producers from southern Western Australia improved their knowledge, skills and confidence in their business production and profit drivers.
Benefits to industry
Participating producers increased their knowledge of business benchmarking, understanding the production and profit drivers of their livestock business and identifying areas for improvement that increase their productivity and profitability.
MLA action
MLA continues to support delivery of PGS SLP packages to increase the knowledge, skills and confidence of red meat producers.
Future research
As this PGS SLP package is an adoption project there was no research undertaken or future research reccomendations made.
