Summary

AMG is a recently formed company who have purchase and acquired a dormant processing facility. AMG has invested $50m in converting the dormant beef and lamb processing facility into a modern beef processing facility. The facility is primed for leveraging current state of the art processing technology to develop innovative solutions both in processing and market offerings.

This project funded the Australian Meat Group (AMG) Collaborative Innovation Program (CIP). The report covers the development of innovation capability with AMG and R&D projects undertaken throughout the CIP.

MLA’s CIP involves the co-development of comprehensive innovation plans with individual enterprises which meet commercial imperatives in addition to focusing on the implementation of key industry and government innovation priorities.

Objectives

Through this project, the Innovation Manager aimed to:

  • develop an approved Con-Innovation strategy for AMG
  • establish 6 project plans and develop a 2-year timeframe to outline when each project will be funded, started and completed
  • execute the first projects that have been approved according to the agreed timeframe
  • establish a communications regime with MDC and AMG.

Key findings

The CIP is a flexible enterprise innovation capability building program that is customised for large and small enterprises throughout the red meat value chain.

Enterprise innovation capability within the context of this program is defined as the underlying capacities that enable a firm to be innovative on a sustained basis, rather than producing one-off product innovations from time to time.

Benefits to industry

The CIP benefits the red meat industry by:

  • improving innovation that drives productivity
  • expanding companies to include all levels of the plant as part of an overall commitment to developing innovation capability building
  • drive behaviour change throughout the plant
  • create innovation cultures within the business that are expressed through symbols or mythologies.

MLA action

Future MLA innovation and capability program investments will focus on alignment of capability building to specific areas of productivity improvement.
