Did you know the SheepGenomics Program helped advance global understanding about the sheep genome?

Project start date: 01 February 2008
Project end date: 02 August 2008
Project status: Completed
Livestock species: Sheep
Relevant regions: South Australia

Summary

Before the SheepGenomics Program (SGP) began, there was very little accessible sheep-based genomic information available. The Bioinformatics component of the program worked to gather sheep-specific genome information and place it in readily accessible databases, and worked in increasing understanding of the sheep genome.
This project contracted a bioinformatics consultant who was responsible for managing the integrity, storage and communication of the data produced by the program. They also provided support for a range of SGP projects in South Australia including sequencing and analysing data to increase understanding of the sheep genome.

Benefits to industry

SheepGenomics Program research outputs included: the Australian contribution to publishing the sheep genome, developing sheep genomic analysis tools used for genomics research and breeding by industry, the development of a large phenotype and genotype database to improve accuracy in selecting for high value traits, and therefore improving industry breeding programs and productivity.
