Summary
MLA and ALFA have identified an opportunity to develop a clear career pathway for the attainment of skills for feedlot employees. This will include educational, training, professional development resources and opportunities.
MLA and ALFA have developed the Feedlot Tech Training Hub to house online courses for feedlot staff. ALFA has identified that training in 'Feeding and Milling' is a high priority. Feed mills have high staff turnover that produces costs through re-training and productivity losses by new staff whilst they reach a competency level. This project will develop a module on a range of aspects of milling, grain processing, ration and commodity testing and record keeping.
There is also an opportunity to raise skill levels across the industry and the speed at which competency standards are achieved through development of engaging training materials. The end goal of effective training material development is to improve feedlot profitability and the attractiveness of the industry as a career option aligned with Red Meat 2030.
Objectives
(1) Develop training materials (as per MLA specifications) for the Feeding and Milling course (Feedstuff, energy and what constitutes a ration; Milling and grain processing; Commodity and ration testing and ensuring QA; Record keeping modules) to integrate into the Feedlot Industry Training Portal.
(2) Develop training materials in consultation with subject matter experts approved by MLA.
(3) Develop training materials in accordance with a provided style guide and format requirements to a highly professional standard.
Key findings
An online training course was developed for feeding and grain processing and is available on the Feedlot Tech Training Hub.
Benefits to industry
It is envisaged that the online training course will accelerate skill development in grain processing and feeding for Feedlot mill staff. This will build staff capability and sustainability in feedlot operations.
