NLIS Animal Movement Data Visualisation Phase 2
ISC is developing an NLIS Animal Movements Visualisation Tool to help us visualise animal transportation routes around Australia.
Project start date: | 06 April 2022 |
Project end date: | 14 April 2022 |
Publication date: | 06 April 2022 |
Project status: | Completed |
Summary
In 2019 ISC developed the NLIS Animal Movements Visualisation Tool, to show the depth of data within NLIS and its potential use for providing insights. The aim of this project was to ingest more historical data from NLIS and include more visualisation features, in order to create a more compelling story of the NLIS Animal Movements.
Objectives
The ongoing development of the visualisation tool in order to deliver the following functional elements to the system:
1. Visualisation of transportation routes – to best estimate rather than current “as the crow flies” abstraction
2. Location search based on standard map locations.
The following design/interface changes will be developed:
1. Improvement of volume visualisation
2. UI improvements as discussed and agreed during scoping and within reason of allocated hours to this deliverable
The following non-functional changes will be required within the solution:
1. Include historical data of previous 10 years
2. Aggregation of data by state
3. Calculation of normalised unit of movement – i.e. 1mm line thickness equals x cattle or x sheep.
Benefits to industry
The Animal Movement tool's primary use was at the Stakeholder Forum on 8 August to show the depth of data ISC has and show its potential use for providing insights. During the course of the initial project it became evident that there were further insights we could gather and demonstrate with higher value to the user of the tool. Phase 2 built on these initial foundations by developing additional functionality to the tool to allow the user to gather insights out of the tool in a visual manner.
Future research
Future research will involve utilising the tool to discover insights in the animal movement in Australia. This tool will have to be further developed before it can be utilised externally as it is currently only available for internal use.
