MLA, UNE and NSW Department of Primary Industries (NSW DPI) are co-owners of the BREEDPLAN and OVIS analytical software (the Owners) utilised to provide genetic evaluation services to beef cattle and sheep producers.

Summary

This project provided recommendations on a business model for the delivery of genetic evaluation services across the red meat sector. The project applied a staged methodology comprising financial and market analysis, business model design, and structured consultation with industry stakeholders. Alternative delivery approaches were assessed against agreed principles, with emphasis on feasibility, financial sustainability and capacity to expand service reach.

Objectives

The objective was to identify a business model capable of ensuring financial viability, wider market relevance and continued genetic progress.

Improvement of the delivery of genetic evaluations for beef, sheep and goats in the future for Australia.

Benefits to industry

The business model recommended by the project has the potential to provide the red meat industry with a single, trusted service platform that enhances genetic gain, underpins value-based trading, strengthens research linkages, and secures long-term commercial viability.

MLA action

To work with the other owners of BREEDPLAN and OVIS to act as required on findings of the review.

Future research

The findings from the review will be used to facilitate improvement of the delivery of genetic evaluations for beef, sheep and goats in the future for Australia.
