Summary

This project provided recommendations to the Owners on a business model for the delivery of genetic evaluation services across the red meat sector. Current delivery through BREEDPLAN and Sheep Genetics is constrained by reliance on a narrow market base, fragmented structures and insufficient revenue to fund essential reinvestment and phenotyping, leaving the system vulnerable to competition and market fragmentation.

The project applied a staged methodology comprising financial and market analysis, business model design, and structured consultation with industry stakeholders. Alternative delivery approaches were assessed against agreed principles, with emphasis on feasibility, financial sustainability and capacity to expand service reach.

Objectives

The objective was to identify a business model capable of ensuring financial viability, wider market relevance and continued genetic progress.

Key findings

Findings confirmed that “business as usual” is not viable. A consolidated, industry-driven service model integrating multiple data sources was identified as the preferred option. This approach enables delivery of more accurate and widely relevant breeding values, development of commercially focused selection tools, lower per-animal processing costs, and mechanisms to recognise and reward data provision.

The business model recommended by the project has the potential to provide the red meat industry with a single, trusted service platform that enhances genetic gain, underpins value-based trading, strengthens research linkages, and secures long-term commercial viability.

Future research

The findings from the review will be used to facilitate improvement of the delivery of genetic evaluations for beef, sheep and goats in the future for Australia.
