Summary

The National Livestock Identification System (NLIS) is Australia’s system for the identification and traceability of livestock. NLIS reflects Australia’s commitment to biosecurity and food safety and provides a competitive advantage in global markets. Under NLIS, livestock are identified with animal identification technologies.  The purpose of this project was to assess, test and benchmark the performance of new and existing RFID livestock identification technologies to ensure they meet NLIS Approved Identification Technology (AIT) program requirements, and the devices will work in field.

Objectives

Assess, test and benchmark the performance of new and existing RFID livestock identification technologies to ensure they meet National Livestock Identification System (NLIS) Approved Identification Technology (AIT) program requirements, and the devices will work in field.

Key findings

Livestock identification devices containing RFID transponders must be able to be reliably read to ensure accurate and fast traceability.

Benefits to industry

Ensure the performance of electronic RFID identification devices approved for use under the NLIS and investigate any issues with non-performing devices.

MLA action

Continued benchmark testing will continue to ensure identification devices containing RFID transponders can be reliably read in accordance with the NLIS Approved Identification Technology (AIT) program.

Future research

Continued benchmark testing will continue to ensure identification devices containing RFID transponders can be reliably read in accordance with the NLIS Approved Identification Technology (AIT) program.
