The course was developed in partnership with the SA Arid Lands Landscape Board, with input from a range of experience rangeland researchers and advisors in order to suit pastoralists across Australia’s southern rangelands.

Attending this workshop will help you to:

  • understand what drives animal production and options to manage this within your production system
  • learn about the indicators of forage production and/or landscape function on your property and some of the options available to you to maintain or improve productivity
  • identify points for key management decisions based on the environment, climate and livestock requirements.

What you will learn:

  • how arid and semi-arid ecosystems (climate, soils, and vegetation) function to produce forage available for grazing
  • how the seasonal climate profile for your location can help identify decision points for stocking decisions
  • the role of perennial plants (grasses and shrubs) in land condition and pasture stability
  • the condition of land resources on your property
  • the connection between land condition, pasture growth, animal production and long-term productivity goals
  • safe utilisation levels, long-term carrying capacity and short-term carrying capacity
  • the concept of tactical grazing and its application to improving land condition and productivity
  • some approaches to managing total grazing pressure
  • estimation of short-term carrying capacity through forage budgeting or other methods.
