Get the word out about FMD and LSD

11 August 2022

Australia is currently free of foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) and lumpy skin disease (LSD), and it’s our priority to keep it that way.

While it’s the Australian government’s responsibility to protect Australia from these diseases, the red meat industry – in partnership with MLA – is doing everything possible to support this work. Educating other producers, as well as the wider community, around the steps we can take to prevent FMD and LSD is key.

If you’re interested in helping spread the word about FMD and LSD, social media is a great way to connect. MLA has created a social media toolkit to help you get the important messages about each disease out there and keep our industry FMD and LSD free.

1.       To prevent FMD and LSD from entering Australia:

  • ask family and friends overseas not to send you any dairy or meat products
  • check the current biosecurity import conditions before you send goods to Australia
  • don’t buy meat or dairy products online from overseas sellers, or bring them back from overseas in your baggage
  • clean any shoes, clothing and equipment that have been overseas before sending them or bringing them back to Australia
  • declare any risk goods to a biosecurity officer for inspection on arrival in Australia
  • declare if you have visited a rural area or been in contact with, or near, farm animals overseas as soon as you arrive back in Australia.
