Summary

This project evaluated the current genetic evaluation landscape for the Australian cattle industry and the genomic requirements from key stakeholders, including stock agents, producers, breed societies and researchers. As well as revising the strategic direction industry should take in regards to genomic technologies moving forward. It was identified that the main reason for success and uptake of genomic selection is dependent on the accuracy of prediction and its cost. Factors important for a successful implementation of genomic selection are influenced by:A decent size reference population for economically important traits;A genetic evaluation pipeline where phenotypic and genomic information is turned into predictions of genetic merit;Low-cost genotyping tools; andA clear understanding of the benefit by those investing in genotyping.

Building a strong genetics portfolio for industry that addresses these four factors is vital for the successful use of genomic tools in the beef industry. For further information about the project please contact the MLA – Program Manager, Livestock Genetics.
