Summary
This project was an ambitious, complex multi-year, multi-phase program of work which brings together a consortium of partners to collaboratively deisgn, select and build an industry wide data exchange. The structure of this phase of the project fell into three key phases:
1. Kick start and discovery
2. Consult, collaborate and capture
3. Validate and plan.
Objectives
The purpose of this project engagement was to assist with the first stage of a large scale multi-year program to ultimately produce an agrifood industry-wide data exchange which allows primary producers and other value chain participants to exchange their data efficiently and on agreed terms with trusted service providers or other interested parties such as government and researchers.
Key findings
Some of the key outcomes from this inital phase of work included:
- Developed the vision for the Aus Agrifood Data Exchange
- Conducted 27 consultations with government, RDCs and industry associations.
- Conducted a design-led thinking workshop with 37 stakeholders
- Developed an investment prospectus
Benefits to industry
An absence of a well-managed national agricultural and food data exchange for use by various stakeholders within the agriculture industry is limiting Australia's production potential and causing significant supply side inefficiencies, leaving Australia trailing behind competing nations. This problem is likely to get worse as the world becomes increasingly reliant on technology and access to data information. Benefits from this multi-phase program of work seek to create a data highway for obtaining data for decision making, and improving the functionality and analytical potential of data, ultimately leading to valuable time saving realisations not only within the read meat industry but across the Australian agrifood sector.
MLA action
MLA/ ISC will continue to act as a lead role in the Australian Agrifood data exchange program into phase 2 and 3.
Future research
Phase 2 of the program will involve securing co-investment for the next phases of the project to demonstrate that cross industry support is there for the Australian Agrifood Data Exchange project. The next phase will focus on establishing the project and also identifying up to four use cases to inform the experiments. Phase 2 will also involve confirming stakeholder participation.
