Summary

This project covered the Annual Service Agreement between MLA and Australian Lot Feeders Association (ALFA), which covered consultation, animal health & welfare and biosecurity activities, industry leadership and capability building and adoption activities.

Objectives

  • Consultation with the grain fed industry to provide information on national lot fed sector priorities to MLA, to inform investments in RD&A and marketing.
  • Encourage adoption of MLA R&D outcomes by feedlots.
  • Provide input into national cattle animal health and welfare and biosecurity activities and initiatives.
  • Build industry leadership and capability for the lot fed sector.

Key findings

  • Grain fed sector priorities were provided to MLA for consideration in investment decisions.
  • A number of scholarship opportunities were provided to emerging leaders to build capability in the sector.
  • Input was provided into national animal health, welfare and biosecurity activities.
  • MLA R&D outcomes were communicated to members through a number of channels including the workshop program.

Benefits to industry

The representative organisation for the lot feeding sector was supported in FY21 to carry out initiatives identified by the sector.

MLA action

MLA continues to support industry leadership and capability building for the red meat industry. Feedback from a number of initiatives within the project has been incorporated in planned for the FY22 service agreement to provide more targeted investments and use of funds.

MLA will continue to use information collected through the ALFA Service Agreement to inform investment decisions in line with Red Meat 2030.
