Summary

The Goat Industry Technical Officer's role was to advise MLA and the goat industry in the design of goat specific field trials, demonstration sites and development programs relating in particular to the feedbase and nutrition management and genetic improvement.

Objectives

1. Assist in the development and evaluation of proposed RD&A and PDS projects with direction
from the MLA project manager.
2. Provide review and comment of milestone and final reports to ensure MLA requirements of
technical and editorial quality are met.
4. Provide ongoing review of the validity of the projects.
5. Liaise with goat producers, RD&A providers and other stakeholders as required by MLA.
6. Actively seek out MLA MDC project opportunities with the goal of this role being self-funded
by 2020.

Key findings

The consultant provided advice regarding goat specific trial designs, demonstration sites and development programs for improved application and adoption by producers. This assistance lead to more and better projects being put forward for funding. The consultant had a specific goal to seek out MDC project opportunities in order to be self-funded by 2020, leading to enhanced and faster adoption of improved practices. The consultant also actively looked for opportunities to link project outcomes with MLA funded adoption programs.

The benefits of having a Technical Officer for the goat industry included improved technical review of projects and project reporting, and an increased presence in the industry.
