Summary
Processing plants rely heavily on paper National Vendor Declarations, requiring information to be manually entered and creating delays when details are missing, illegible or incorrect. The project integrated electronic National Vendor Declaration data into Yartoo Software’s DAISY system through a secure API, supported by processor engagement, software development and testing in a live processing environment. The integration enabled processors to view and validate consignment information within existing workflows, although incomplete eNVD data and continued reliance on paper records constrained the efficiency benefits.
Objectives
The project aimed to integrate eNVD data into Yartoo Software’s DAISY platform so meat processors could access, use and validate livestock consignment information within their existing workflows. It involved reviewing eNVD API requirements, consulting processor customers to understand operational needs, implementing secure data transfer between the eNVD database and DAISY, and demonstrating the integrated capability. The project also sought to identify unsupported supply-chain processes, improve receivals functionality, provide training and support, reduce the time required to validate consignments, and make eNVD information accessible across the DAISY system.
Key findings
Integrating eNVD data into DAISY was technically achievable and gave processors access to consignment information within their operational system, including lists of consignments, individual records and links to internal plant data.
Rule-based validation provided a structured way to identify discrepancies between eNVD information and plant records, improving validation where consignments were complete and accurately recorded.
Incomplete eNVDs and continued reliance on paper NVDs required users to check multiple information sources, limiting efficiency gains and increasing workload.
Differences in suppliers’ computer skills and training affected eNVD uptake and data quality, while processor customers indicated interest in supporting adoption through incentives and training.
Benefits to industry
The integration demonstrated how processors can access and validate digital consignment information within their existing plant systems, improving visibility and supporting more consistent validation when eNVD records are complete. As paper NVDs are phased out and digital data quality improves, the functionality has the potential to support faster validation and better traceability of changes and corrections.
MLA action
MLA has continued to support eNVD adoption across the red meat supply chain by investing in projects that improve connectivity between producer, processor and integrity system technologies. The outcomes of this project have contributed to industry understanding of how eNVD data can be integrated into processor systems, reducing barriers to digital information sharing and supporting broader uptake of electronic consignments. MLA continues to work with industry participants to improve digital capability and enable producers and supply-chain partners to realise greater value from eNVD technology.
Future research
Improve the completeness and consistency of eNVD information through targeted supplier training and better system prompts at the point of data entry.
Further develop DAISY’s validation rules, handling of complex consignment data and communication features, including comments and notifications.
Consider broader implementation at additional processor sites and continued integration with other supply-chain information to increase the operational value of eNVD data.
