Summary
Livestock Matters is an initiative of the WA Livestock Research Council designed to deliver optimal awareness and engagement on matters of livestock production that are in response to current R&D priorities. The 2025 series took the form of one sheep and one cattle event, both held on farm, in the key red meat production region of West Midlands. The design of these events is such that the discussion will serve to reinforce current priorities and identify new ones but, in the process, deliver quality, timely, relevant information that extends and builds upon current and recently funded MLA projects.
Objectives
The aim/or objective of the events are:
- To clearly demonstrate that MLA is listening to and engaging with producers in the region via its Research Council.
- To reinforce and identify research priorities, and to show that previous priorities are now 'in the field' and making a difference.
- To deliver confidence and motivation for best practice livestock management during challenging environmental and economic times.
Key findings
Feedback from the forums indicates that the agenda met the needs of the participants. Survey responses indicated that participants were engaged and learnt something new. WALRC has now consulted with almost 200 stakeholders, providing a significant amount of data for priority setting discussions. Due to the location of the forums, many of the producers attending had not been engaged with WALRC previously.
Benefits to industry
The Forums provided an opportunity for WALRC to demonstrate MLA’s commitment to producers in the regions, to identify research priorities, highlight MLA funded research originating from previous priorities and discuss best practice livestock management opportunities through in-depth discussion of relevant farming systems.
MLA action
The final report from this project will be published on the MLA R&D reports website.
Future research
MLA will continue to work with WALRC to deliver producer adoption events in WA.
