Summary
To support an ongoing sustainable trade with Brunei, a two-month technical consultancy was delivered to provide input into growth strategies, production efficiencies and data driven decision making.
Brunei is a relatively small but important market for Australia. However, due to these small volumes the long-term sustainability of this trade with shipping challenges and increased costs is at risk. The project focused on working with a major importer to assist with longer term planning and options for increased shipping volumes.
This project is part of an ongoing collaboration with the Brunei market and has so far delivered reviews on feedlot/processing operations, training and recommendations.
Objectives
Conduct a review of the processor’s QA systems, cutting lines and business model providing solutions and recommendations to improve operations.
Conduct a feasibility study for primal variances in cutting lines, chilled tender stretched carcases in meeting existing commercial arrangements/expectation of their customers.
Assess meat quality and inhibitors to improved meat quality and provide solutions and recommendations.
Based on reviews & recommendations, conduct boning room training assessing the participants as competent to complete the required changes to process.
Increase the throughput of the abattoir by a minimum of 10%.
Key findings
The review has been completed and highlighted opportunities to increase feedlot performance and cattle procurement planning to meet market demands. Opportunities also exist in processing, with a change in hanging method (Achilles hung to tender stretched) trialled.
Benefits to industry
The main importer in Brunei is actively exploring opportunities to grow their business and trade with Australia.
MLA action
LEP to continue the collaboration in Brunei and in addition look for other opportunities across our SEA partner markets.
Future research
The LEP is continuing their collaboration in Brunei with the next stage of the project a deep dive into processing opportunities in-market and with export potential.
