L.MSG.2506 - MSA DCU Grading Application for Android

In FY23/24, 19 processors, including the MSA team for research purposes, utilised the Microsoft MSA DCU grading application to grade a total of 948,963 carcases or one quarter of graded carcases.

Summary

This project delivered a Meat Standards Australia (MSA) beef grading application compatible with the new android-based Data Capture Devices (DCUs) – the hand-held devices that capture carcase measurements and generate eating quality calculations during the process of MSA grading for processors that do not have a fully integrated system solution.

Objectives

- development and delivery of a new MSA DCU application for use on Android devices
- functionality to be developed as part of the application includes:
• user interface
• barcode format decoding
• PBR template handling (inc multiple templates)
• export XML file
• defaults storing and use.

Key findings

This project provides processors with greater flexibility in choosing cost-effective and readily available data entry solutions for MSA grading. This will allow easier device sourcing and future proofing for ongoing operations.

Benefits to industry

This project delivered a new MSA grading application compatible with android devices, addressing the challenges posed by obsolete hardware. The investment not only resolved the issues related to outdated equipment but provided processors with access to improved device availability, potential lower costs, and enhanced software support in the future. By transitioning to android, the application will ensure long-term viability and operational efficiency.
