What producers think of the Breeding EDGE workshop:

Attending this workshop will help you to:

  • identify where your current breeder herd and bull management programs can be improved to reduce reproductive loss
  • measure reproductive performance more accurately
  • identify strategies and management to improve selection, retention, management and performance
  • develop or refine a practical and achievable management plan for the breeding herd that will lead to higher productivity
  • gain a thorough understanding of genetic improvement for both breeding cattle and turn-off cattle and develop breeding objectives to take your herd in a more profitable direction.

What you will learn:

  • current herd performance – what measures matter most
  • ways to address reproduction and reproductive loss in your herd
  • how to select, retain and manage cattle based on their reproductive performance and requirements
  • develop a breeder herd management plan to take back and put into practice.

What this workshop covers:

  • stages of the reproductive cycle
  • measuring reproductive performance and setting performance targets
  • systems to manage your breeders, including nutritional requirements and pasture availability
  • bull fertility, selection and management
  • mating management and weaning strategies
  • heifer management, pregnancy diagnosis and investigating poor performance
  • reproductive disease management
  • genetic improvement of your herd (including breeding objectives and profit drivers)
  • selection criteria and selection tools
  • breeds and breeding systems, including crossbreeding.

Whilst not a pre-requisite, Breeding EDGE is a perfect next step from MLA's BredWell FedWell workshop.
