Summary

The livestock industry relies on accurate traceability systems to support market access, compliance and integrity across the supply chain. This project developed and implemented an API integration between the Optio software platform and Integrity Systems' electronic National Vendor Declaration (eNVD) system, enabling processors to access, validate and manage eNVD data more efficiently. Additional integrations with processor operational systems and industry training resources were developed to support implementation. The project has contributed to increased digital adoption, resulting in a 9.8% increase in eNVD creation within the processing plants involved in the project.

Objectives

The project aimed to improve adoption of electronic National Vendor Declarations (eNVDs) by reducing barriers to use within the livestock processing sector. Key objectives included developing an API connection between the Optio software platform and Integrity Systems' eNVD database, enabling seamless retrieval and validation of eNVD information, integrating this functionality with processor operational systems, improving data accuracy and traceability, reducing manual administrative processes, and providing training and extension resources to support adoption throughout the livestock supply chain.

Key findings

Integration between Optio and Integrity Systems' eNVD database successfully enabled processors to retrieve, validate and manage eNVD records digitally.
Automation of data entry and verification processes reduced manual handling requirements and improved data accuracy.

Automatic synchronisation of eNVD information provided a consistent source of truth across supply chain participants.

Processing plant workshops identified enhancements enabling multi-order eNVD data to be allocated across multiple livestock orders, improving traceability, feedback and invoicing processes.

Successful implementation required coordinated change management across producers, processors, service providers, quality assurance systems and regulatory stakeholders.

The project contributed to a 9.8% increase in eNVD creation in participating processing plants using eNVDs as part of daily operations.

Benefits to industry

This project supports the livestock industry's transition towards digital traceability systems by reducing administrative burden, improving data accuracy and strengthening supply chain visibility. The API integration enables processors to work more efficiently with eNVDs, reducing duplication of effort and manual data entry. Improved access to accurate, real-time documentation enhances traceability and compliance while creating a more seamless experience for livestock producers, processors and other supply chain participants. Increased adoption of eNVDs also supports broader industry objectives around integrity, transparency and digital transformation.

MLA action

MLA supported the development and implementation of an API integration between Optio software and the Integrity Systems eNVD platform to improve digital adoption across the supply chain. The project also delivered training materials and FAQs for processing plant staff, while extension materials were disseminated through processors and livestock buyers to increase awareness of eNVD benefits among producers. The project outcomes provide a foundation for continued industry adoption of digital livestock movement documentation and improved traceability systems.

Future research

Continue expanding integration of eNVD functionality with processor operational and enterprise systems to further streamline workflows.

Investigate additional automation opportunities across livestock supply chain documentation and compliance processes.

Explore strategies to accelerate adoption among producers who continue to use paper-based NVDs.

Develop additional change management, training and extension programs to support adoption across the wider livestock processing ecosystem.

Evaluate longer-term impacts on traceability, compliance efficiency and supply chain data quality as adoption increases.
