Meat & Livestock Australia supports consumption of red meat in line with the Australian Dietary Guidelines.

The Australian Dietary Guidelines recommend consumption of lean red meat in a healthy diet because it is an important source of protein, iron and zinc in the Australian diet. An appropriate amount recommended for health, wellbeing and the environment is 130g lean and cooked red meat every second day.

Australian beef and lamb is popular in the Australian diet and appreciated around the world for its ‘natural’ nutrition credentials, versatility, quality, high food safety standards and its great taste.

We work with nutrition experts and the Australian red meat industry to help Australians enjoy beef, lamb and goat meat by providing product information, meal ideas and practical tips in line with Australian Dietary Guidelines.

Our investment

Healthy Cuisines is a nutrition education program providing a bridge between dietary guidelines and ‘the plate’.

It addresses three key challenges for nutrition education:

  • The popularity of the internet for nutrition information
  • Consumers who want to eat healthily but need it to be ‘doable’ and enjoyable
  • Lack of ‘one size fits all’ solutions where foods such as red meat and vegetables are typically consumed in a variety of meals

Our investments in research and communications generates information and resources for engaging and enabling the general public to eat healthily - including relevant behavioural insights, consumption habits, product information, meal ideas and practical tips.

The program builds on MLA’s reputation for high quality, nutrition education materials and investment in research on the nutritional value of red meat and its role in a healthy diet.
