Producers sought to drive research adoption on-farm

25 October 2018

Producers with an interest in increasing the rate of adoption of on-farm research and development (R&D) outcomes are being sought to form a new Producer Adoption Reference Group.

Meat & Livestock Australia (MLA) is establishing the group to provide advice to MLA on the issues impacting the uptake of R&D adoption by beef and sheepmeat producers.

It will be chaired by MLA General Manager, Producer Consultation and Adoption, Michael Crowley, and its membership will include the following representatives:

  • three beef producers
  • two sheepmeat producers
  • one woolgrower
  • one adoption researcher
  • one adoption service provider
  • two peak industry council representatives (one from Sheep Producers Australia and one from Cattle Council of Australia).

MLA Program Manager, Adoption, David Packer, said the group will be one of the several reference groups that oversee and assist the direction of MLA’s strategies and programs.

“These reference groups are key interfaces between MLA and the red meat and livestock industry and they ensure that MLA’s programs seek outcomes that are relevant to and valued by producers,” Mr Packer said.

“The Producer Adoption Reference Group will provide strategic direction on adoption-related issues and provide advice to MLA within the confines of budget and governance matters.”

Mr Packer said the group will focus on a range of key areas, aimed at overcoming the barriers to commercial adoption of R&D.

“The group will provide advice and prioritisation of MLA activities during project development and endorse operational plans,” Mr Packer said.

“It will also monitor key performance indicators and apprise peak industry councils on the outcomes of adoption-related activities across the red meat sector.

“Further, it will ensure that adoption-related communication is consistent, targeted and effective.”

MLA will provide operational support for the group.
