Goat supplies and exports contract

09 December 2015

During November, average weekly eastern states goat slaughter, reported by MLA’s NLRS, was 36% below year-ago levels, at 29,773 head. Most states registered a large reduction in goat kills for the first two weeks of the month.

The tighter supply, particularly going into the Christmas break, has assisted prices to stay at record highs, with the November average over-the-hook indicator for 12-16kg cwt goats up 123¢/kg cwt year-on-year, at 481¢/kg cwt.

Underpinned by lower slaughter, Australian goatmeat exports in November eased 30% on the previous year, to 2,726 tonnes swt (Department of Agriculture).

  • Exports to the US were 21% lower at 1,781 tonnes swt
  • Shipments to Taiwan remained relatively similar year-on-year, at 403 tonnes swt, while volumes to Korea doubled to 40 tonnes swt
  • Volumes to China and Hong Kong declined 51% and 76%, to 62 tonnes swt and 75 tonnes swt, respectively.
