Summary

This project conducted an external review of the economic value proposition of adopting serradella pastures in the high rainfall pasture areas of southern Australia and identified key attributes as well as gaps in knowledge related to serradella establishment, productivity and management.

Objectives

The potential for serradellas to be used in the medium to high rainfall zones is the focus of continuing research into their agronomy and applicability. This project reviewed the data from the current and previous trials regarding underpinning science behind the project and the information required for the successful adoption of serradella pastures. The project conducted a cost benefit analysis of establishing serradella pastures and identified key remaining information gaps.

Key findings

The review has provided guidance to support ongoing research projects and future investments related to enhancing serradella pastures in the high rainfall permanent pasture zones of southern Australia.

Benefits to industry

The review has provided clear direction to MLA and partners on key gaps in current knowledge that will be instrumental in guiding the development of extension materials and to supporting the case for future project investments.

MLA action

The final report will inform MLA's upcoming release of Serradella Management Guidelines relevant to the high rainfall pasture zones of southern Australia.

Future research

Future research recommendations have been collated and these will be used to inform future investment.
