Global Markets Update – a note from Andrew Cox

13 March 2023

The first 2023 edition of MLA’s Global Markets Update (GMU) highlights the recently launched Aussie Meat Trade Hub, which has been in development for the past year. The previous platforms that MLA’s commercial partners used to deliver and receive information from customers and other stakeholders were outdated and dispersed across eight different websites, causing confusion for users. To address this issue, an overhaul was required. The hub will now serve as a one-stop shop for MLA’s commercial partners looking to grow their Australian red meat sales.

Coinciding with the Aussie Meat Trade Hub launch is the refresh of the logo used to promote Australian beef and lamb in overseas markets. The word ‘True’ has been removed from the ‘True Aussie’ brand, and there is now more space for local languages.

Recently, I visited MLA's teams in Japan, the Middle East, the United Kingdom and Europe, including the Supermarket Trade Show in Japan and Gulfood in Dubai. At both trade shows, MLA managed Aussie Beef and Lamb pavilions, with over 40 Australian exporters participating.

From conversations with customers, it is evident that general market sentiment towards Australian red meat remains positive despite concerns over inflation and consumer confidence. You can find summaries of both trade shows in this edition of GMU.

Lastly, the Australia-UK Free Trade Agreement is progressing through the UK political and parliamentary procedures, albeit slower than anticipated. Negotiations with the European Union are back on track in 2023, with ambitions for significant progress this financial year.
