Vic weekly sheep summary

Lamb

Overall Victorian lamb consignments remained steady week-on-week, offering 18,551 head.

  • Hamilton penned 64% more lambs, totalling 2,553 head
  • Horsham numbers were up 78%, to 4,653 head
  • Consignments at Bendigo were back by 26%, offering 7,341 head
  • Ballarat penned 4,004 head, back 14%

Light trade weight young lambs to slaughter reached 620¢ and averaged 592¢, while heavier trade weights sold between 568¢ and 666¢ to average 610¢, up 7¢/kg cwt. Heavy weight 3 score lambs to processors gained 19¢, to average 627¢/kg cwt.

Light weight Merino 2 score lambs were 74¢ cheaper on 445¢, and first cross lambs eased 8¢ to 528¢/kg cwt. Light second cross lambs were also cheaper, easing 13¢ to average 555¢/kg cwt.

Heavy trade weight first cross 3 score lambs returned 553¢, back 20¢, while the second crosses averaged 572¢, up 9¢/kg cwt.

Heavy weight second cross lambs slipped 14¢ and averaged 552¢, while first cross lambs gained 9¢, to return 577¢/kg cwt.

Mutton

Mutton consignments lifted 17% to 22,205 head.

  • Horsham supply lifted 14% to 4,815 head
  • Supply at Bendigo reached 12,721 head, up 49%
  • Numbers at Hamilton eased to 1,776 head, back 24%
  • Ballarat consigned 2,893 head, back 25%

Light weight Merino 1 score ewes were 11¢ dearer, on 389¢, while medium weight 2 score Merinos returned an average of 379¢, up 1¢/kg cwt. Heavy weight 3 score first cross ewes slipped 8¢ and averaged 348¢/kg cwt.

Light weight Merino 2 score wethers jumped 22¢, to 384¢/kg cwt.
