Beef shipments continue to be restricted by the availability of cattle across Australia, with year-to-date volumes back 22%, at 842,000 tonnes swt (DAWR). However, some beef markets have remained strong, with the Philippines and Taiwan up 22% and 4%, respectively, across the first ten months of the year, at about 25,000 tonnes per market. Export growth to Indonesia also reflected the change in cut import policies, with shipments up 53% year-on-year, at almost 51,000 tonnes swt.

Year-to-October lamb exports were up 1% year-on-year, at almost 196,000 tonnes swt, and on track for another record year. Mutton shipments reflected the relative tight supply of sheep hitting the market, back 11% so far this year, at almost 108,000 tonnes swt. Interestingly, the 16% decline in mutton exports to China this year has been entirely offset by the increase in lamb exports, with the market taking 48,000 tonnes swt of sheepmeat this year. Lamb to the US continued to record growth, up 8% at 43,000 tonnes swt.

Limited by local supplies, particularly over the winter months, goatmeat exports have continued to decline in 2016 for the second consecutive year – albeit off a record high base in 2013. Few export markets have been able to rival the US for Australian goatmeat with 67% product heading to the market so far in 2016.

MLA will provide further analysis and insights behind each of the species trends in next week’s MLW.
