Numbers on feed stay above million mark

07 March 2019

For the first time, every quarter saw numbers on feed above the one million mark in 2018.

The results of the latest ALFA/MLA National Accredited Feedlot Survey show numbers on feed at the end of the December 2018 quarter sat at 1.11 million head, down 1% on the previous quarter.

High numbers on feed throughout 2018 resulted in increased grainfed cattle turn-off, contributing to an important proportion of production in a challenging year.

Grainfed beef exports for 2018 surpassed 300,000 tonnes shipped weight to set a new calendar year record. Added to heightened turn-off, strong demand in north Asian markets, combined with favourable movements in the Australian dollar, supported the lift.
