L.GEN.1903 - Sheep Genetics Genomic Database Service Summary

This project allowed funding for the database service and support for the Sheep Genomics databases.

Project start date: 29 October 2019
Project end date: 19 March 2023
Publication date: 13 February 2024
Project status: Completed
Livestock species: Sheep, Lamb
Relevant regions: National

Summary

The project contributed to the transitioning of the genomic database and services from the Sheep CRC to MLA.

Objectives

The genomic database is used within industry to assist in the accurate prediction of Australian Sheep Breeding Values (ASBVs), through the development of a reference population and parent identification.

Key findings

The service provided by the Animal Genetics Breeding Unit as part of this project included the housing and maintenance of a secure copy of the genomic database as well as providing the services required for interaction with MLA’s Sheep Genetics business unit and customer support to stakeholders requiring interaction with the genomic database.

Benefits to industry

The continual maintenance and development of a genomic database provides significant improvement in the potential rates of genetic progress that can be made for hard-to-measure traits.

MLA action

Further development of the Sheep Genomic database where necessary.

Future research

Further development of the Sheep Genomic database where appropriate.
