Summary

​This was a strategic science approach to tackling weed management by developing a system to autonomously detect and selectively control weeds using an unmanned vehicle (aerial and terrestrial being evaluated). This system is being developed in New Zealand and was to be explored for an application in Australia incorporating three key components;

  1. hyperspectral imaging (targeting, using unique spectral profiles),
  2. GPS identification (detection) and
  3. laser alignment (damage).  

The project was established as a joint trans-Tasman initiative between Australian and New Zealand producers, government, researchers and other stakeholders with the R&D initially conducted in NZ to determine Proof of Concept then developed / evaluated in Australia. The project was terminated due to a  reduced budget forecast by ABARES (Australian Government) and resulting available R&D match being provided to MLA.
